Safe Passage Tennis Program Who we are? The Safe Passage Tennis Program has been operating since 1995 as a non-profit community organization, founded by the late tennis great, Arthur Ashe, to use tennis as a vehicle to improve self-esteem and character of youth in the journey to productive adulthood.
Where we play? We have our daily workouts at the world-class tennis courts at the Home Depot Center (18400 S. Avalon Blvd, Carson, CA 90746), adjacent to California State University Dominguez Hills. This is the home stadium of the Los Angeles Galaxy and venue for many important sporting events. The 8 lighted courts are superbly maintained befitting a venue where professional women's tennis matches are often held. There is plenty of parking, and maintenance and security staff keep the premises safe, secure and clean on a daily and hourly basis.
When we play? Beginning players practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. It is from 4 to 5pm for ages 5 to 8. It is from 5 to 6pm for ages 9 to 12. Intermediates practice Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays after school. It is from 4 to 5:30pm. Advanced players (includes Satellite and Open USTA players) practice every day, Monday to Friday from 6pm to 8pm.
Who are our kids? Our children come from diverse multi-cultural backgrounds from our community and has evolved into participation from many parts in Southern California. Participants range in age from 5 to 18. They are bound by their dedication to the sport of tennis, and play at different levels from beginner to highly-ranked junior tournament players. They are well-mannered, respectful, academically-oriented and motivated to succeed. Prior graduates of the program include a current professional player in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), many college tennis scholarship winners, and many more who have gone on to colleges and universities around the country. Current players include highly-ranked USTA Open tournament players who regularly win tournaments from age divisions 8 to 18. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Just how affordable is the program? Very affordable, unmatched by any other academy type of program anywhere. As a "year-round" member, the cost is only $100 every 5 weeks. If there are 2 family members, the cost is $150 every 5 weeks. If there are 3 family members the cost is $175 every 5 weeks. Please inquire about the requirements for a "year-round" membership. As you can see, an advanced player who practices daily, can do 5 workouts per week, 20 workouts per month, and 30 workouts every 5 weeks. At only $100 cost, that translates to $3.33 per workout, which is unheard of in tennis circles. A "year-round" membership requires a minimum amount of volunteer work for the program's children during the year. Alternatively, you can opt to be "non-year round" and pay $200 per 5 weeks, which is still extremely affordable compared to similar programs.
What is the history of the Los Angeles Safe Passage Tennis Program? In its inception in 1995, the program
was formerly Arthur Ashe Safe Passage Foundation Tennis Program, and still
retains the mission of the founder Arthur Ashe: “Tennis courts,
racquets, balls, nets, matches, coaches, counselors, teams, fans, Arthur Ashe was determined to break the stereotypes of tennis by introducing the sport to all people, regardless of socioeconomic background, color or creed. Safe Passage was created to address this need and has provided inner-city children in the community with the direction and motivation needed to succeed on the court, in school and in life. The LA Safe Passage Program utilizes an on-court range of tennis instruction for youth ages 5-18, at a nominal fee that is inclusive. The Program teaches students tennis on a recreational and competitive level, and encourages them to enjoy tennis for life.
How is the program funded? The Safe Passage Tennis Program is a non-profit organization serving the community. It has received funding from various sources and most notably, over the recent years, from the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce (LAJCC). Due to diminished earnings, LAJCC will soon break as our primary benefactor. The Home Depot Center continues to provide support by subsidizing the use of the tennis courts. At present, the program is transitioning to be completely parent-owned and operated due to economic budget downsizing by benefactors. The program accepts donations from corporations and from membership dues from participating families. We are trying to increase the numbers of participating families. We anticipate success in this transition period and expect to retain the strengths of our program.
How good is the coaching staff? Outstanding. The Safe Passage Tennis Program has always had full-time professional coaching since its inception. Coaches Tony Brock and Eduardo Carillo are world-class tennis instructors whose students have included professional players on the tour. They are the long-time professional coaches with us for over 13 years.
My kids are novices, love the game but our budget is limited. How can this tennis program help our kids? The program is ideal, as the Safe Passage Tennis Program has several levels of ability. Your kids can grow with the program, and the fees diminish with each additional child for rates that are already the lowest you will find anywhere else. The time commitments and level of intensity vary by levels of play so your children can be comfortable as they develop their play.
My kid is a ranked USTA Open junior player with his own private coach. How can this tennis program help my kid? Our tennis training program is ideal to supplement your current development with extra workouts for stroke production and match play with comparable players. You can retain your private tennis lessons and coaching, and your current private club membership --- and you can use our program to supplement your child's progress with workout drills and hitting with our junior players. Good kids will help make each other better.
I am interested. What is next? You are welcome to drop by and take a look. Our address is at the top left of this webpage. Observe the training schedule at the top of the webpage and feel free to visit and chat with a coach. Have your child bring his tennis racquets and other gear. He is welcome to try it out. Please contact us on the contact page.
